The Silver Lining of a Recession
Recessions are necessary, and as crazy as it may sound, vital to our economy. We cannot run from it or hide from it; all we can do is try to delay the inevitable. Once it arrives—which it most certainly has—human ingenuity kicks in and begins to adapt accordingly. Think of this economic crisis as a way of skimming the fat that has risen to the surface. Thus, leaving us with a leaner, more efficient economy to cope with whatever the future may hurl at us. America is used to drinking whole milk, and instead we are switching to 2% milk fortified with vitamins A&D. Lets hope we don’t skim too much fat because skim milk tastes like complete crap.
Yes, I know, there has been a lot of scum that has surfaced recently: corporations and banks, with their careless, greedy business decisions; a housing bubble, that has home values tanking 30 percent; corrupt politics, including unregulated bailouts and the selling of a senate seat; and the credit crisis, as sub-prime loans cannot be paid. Even though these events are unprecedented and feel overwhelming, our country will overcome these depressing events. The media are a frenzied pack of hyenas tearing apart the economic carcass lying in the middle of the savanna. I don’t blame them; it’s their job to make a story. However, it tends to exacerbate issues and make us feel completely helpless. Our country will pull together, reform our political system, and new opportunities will arise for those who are have lost their jobs.
You can expect to see this recession spur:
-Entrepenuers to start up new companies (i.g., Microsoft and HP) with bolder, better ideas than current competitors.
-Weaker companies consumed and eradicated by the stronger companies.
-Family and social values strengthened as consumerism tapers off due to limited budgets.
-A shrinking trade deficit as the dollar drops in value and we purchase more goods made here in the USA.
-The Obama administration will pump money into infrastructure creating new schools, roads, and jobs.
-Assets (real estate, stocks) will drop in price creating opportunities to snag a great deal.
-Overall better health as people cut back on alcohol and cigarettes to save money (unless you a complete slave to your addiction).
Recessions are obviously not good times as a whole, but as one door closes, another one opens. After we beat this recession, we will find a better world on the other side waiting for us all.
